Re-enactment Events
Westcentingas participates in a full range of events from local Kent-based venues to those in Europe. Local events range from local fetes to school visits and supporting museum exhibitions and open days. Nationally, we can be seen at West Stow Anglo-Saxon Village in Suffolk where we provide the living history display during the August Bank Holiday weekend. We also work closely with our friends in Regia Anglorum and Ulfhednar England (Wulfheodenas), and attend and support their national events. Westcentingas also travels abroad and has recently participated in events in France and Spain.
Our display is often personalised and adapted to meet the scale of the venue and the wishes of the client. We usually provide a fully authentic living history encampment, complete with tents and all the paraphernalia of an Anglo-Saxon fierd (local land militia) on campaign. The public are encouraged to come and explore all the camp's activities and our members are only too pleased to speak to them. We can also provide an authentic military display. The usual format is full-contact training in the morning followed by a skirmish or ritual single/multple combat in the afternoon.
Film & Media Work
Westcentingas is regularly called upon to undertake film and media work and has acquired a high degree of experience in this field. Members of Westcentingas have participated in all Regia Anglorum's recent film and television projects, which included working on location in Yorkshire for the making of Channel 4's epic reconstruction of the events surrounding the battles of Fulford Gate, Stamford Bridge and Hastings; '1066 - The Battles for Middle Earth'. Members of Westcentingas also participated in 'Michael Wood On Beowulf', the first of a series of programmes for BBC Four's 'Poetry Season'. On that occasion we were joined by the acclaimed actor, Mr Julian Glover, who masterfully recited Beowulf aloud as we feasted in our longhall at Wychurst. As a guest of Ulfhednar, Westcentingas was also represented in the making of 'La Chansons de Roland'. Shot entirely on location in Northern Spain, this documentary seeks to tell the truth behind France's oldest epic poem. More recently we have undertaken work for National Geographic in 'Saxon Gold: Finding the Hoard' and appeared on CBBC's Blue Peter and BBC Two's 'The Great British Bake Off'.
